From February 14 to March 24, Whitney Art Works presents Still, an exhibition featuring three artists who use traditional modes of still life to explore contemporary issues.

Wilson Jay Ong paints dreamlike tableaus rich with objects representing both contemporary issues and personal iconography. His impeccably painted oil canvases call to might the flourishes and rich color of Romanticism, while the imagery spans from the exotic to the domestic to the surreal, leaving the viewer to interpret his or her own unique interpretation.

Debra Yoo works in a bold, painterly style reminiscent of Modernist masters like Cezanne and Matisse. She muses “Still lives are a delight to me. They can embody the purely sensuous pleasure of our surroundings and our ability to make visual connections, or be as charged with meaning as the greatest narrative art. Still lifes remind me of the joys of being human.”


Robert Diamante presents stunning large-format color photos from two new series: the first presents oddly alluring portraits of dead organic matter, while the second features the a panoramic image entitled Buddhism, the first image in an ongoing series on the epistemology of religion.

With distinct echoes of modernism, stunning technical dexterity and bold conceptual propositions, Still is a show that looks at the still-life with one eye on the past and the other toward the future.
