"Mod Props"
Artist Statement

"I have investigated the relationship between the designs we create and the structure of things we find in nature. My work is a result of distilling the elements of the discovered structures to their simplest form. I then take pleasure in applying bright “designer” colors to these iconic shapes creating a push away from a more naturalized coloration.

The wall drawings are “punctuation” to help guide the viewer through the space. In this case I am also addressing the transitory nature of painting. In two weeks the wall drawings will be painted over. This allows both the viewer and myself to release ourselves from having to search for some heavier meaning in the work.

When teaching I often reference listening to music as a comparison to looking at art. The pure pleasure of enjoying a beautiful passage of music without the burden of searching for a specific meaning. For some reason we have a more difficult time viewing art in the same way. We ask: What is it? What does it mean? With music we allow it to wash over us but with color and shape most of us seek specific meaning. I would like the viewer to look at my work in the same way they listen to music.

The works presented here are from my “Lotus Series” and from a group of new work I’m calling “Mod Props”.

I would like to thank MEDITECH for graciously lending several paintings from their collection to this exhibit."
