This body of work reflects my curiosity about the way we relate to the world through visual representations. I question usual ways of seeing and understanding by altering everyday generalizations that are often taken for granted. Through this exploration, an anatomy book becomes a representation of the world, a reassembled map becomes an image from my own personal history, and an artist book is subject to my visual interpretation. It is my intention that these simple alterations will point to the world. Within this gap one can explore our complex relationship to culture. With these works I question how we see, what we seek and how we understand. I intend to pose these questions while leaving the answers for another day.

Mr. Stephan holds a BFA, in sculpture, from SUNY Purchase College and an MFA from Maine College of Art. Recent projects include Percent for Art Projects in Biddeford, ME and on the campus of the University of Southern Maine. He lives and works in Portland.
