Judith Allen

ARTIST STATEMENT
The dislocations in my life and cultural history (growing up in Maine and New York and then living in Greece for many years) have influenced this investigation, which frequently includes unusual juxtapositions of different cultural motifs. In my prints, painting and mixed media work, I layer ancient and modern imagery from different cultures, reflecting my interests in the kinds of ornamentations that have been created in different countries at various periods in history (often by women).
By using artifacts of culture rather than more objective imagery or text, I avoid the possible misreading (political, social or racial, for instance) while still being able to suggest diversity and interaction, pointing out not only the beauty of difference, but,also the comfort of shared origins.

BIOGRAPHY
Ms. Allen holds a Master of Education from the University of LaVerne, LaVerne, CA, and a BFA from Tufts University with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA. She divides her time between Portland, ME and Athens, Greece.
