April 5 - May 12 at 492 Congress
“The Other Biennial at the Whitney”
with Eirene Efstathiou, Joe Kievitt, Rob Lieber, Justin Richel, and Henry Wolyniec

A very special exhibition highlighting the work of five Portland Museum of Art Biennial participants...down the the street at 492 Congress...a great chance to take an extended look.

This month Whitney Art Works congratulates gallery artists whose work was selected for the 2007 Portland Biennial. Eirene Efstathiou creates multiple-paneled suites of paintings using imagery from personal and found photography to share narratives that are alternately politically charged, haunting and witty. Joe Kievitt makes delicate, intricately-detailed works on paper using imagery from landscape and textile patterns. Rob Lieber's delicate and incongruous "ice" sculptures will adorn the support beam of the gallery. Justin Richel, featured in From Baja to Bar Harbor, will reveal new works created during his recent residency at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA. Henry Wolyniec uses painting, cut paper and digital media to create multi-layered, rhythmic collages that capture both inner fantasy and external space. Like the Portland Biennial, this show is a rich survey of the current contemporary scene. By giving the artists a bit more room to stretch out The Other Biennial hopes to showcase some of the best emerging and established artists in Maine and the breadth of form and depth of field in which they work.
