Wax features eleven artists who work in the medium, but push its artistic limits beyond its common identity as a sticky sibling to oil. Some of the artists in the group explore the luminous qualities of the medium by incorporating dynamic line, collage and found objects into their encaustic canvases. Other works in this unique selection include organic abstractions in cold wax medium, figurative sculpture, installation and video projection. Shoshannah White, Judith Allen and Earl Schofield masterfully employ the singular qualities of wax to capture the luminosity of water and atmosphere in their meditative landscapes and still life studies. Susie Schweppe and M.R. Hedstrom contribute abstract compositions, with the former featuring quirky, anthropomorphic lumps and line-work, and the later incorporating strips of silk and pattern. In his installation “In the Hive”, Tyson Jacques uses wax forms infused with portraiture to encourage the viewer to observe human behaviors and social structures as a beekeeper would observe his hives, and Jim Mahoney brings wax fully off the canvas with his multi-media installations “Questions of Desire” and “Cyborg 2007” which feature 2D and 3D elements intertwined with video projection. Pored, dripped, mashed, cast, and tugged, WAX features beautiful and unexpected explorations in an ancient medium.
