Whitney Art Works is committed to serving as a commercial venue for the exhibition of works of both emerging and established contemporary artists. Exhibitions feature the work of painters, photographers, printmakers, and sculptors. A wide spectrum of visual arts is exhibited, as well as a host of events including music, performance, and the presentation of the written word.


Whitney Art Works is located in two venues in Portland:

In our main gallery at 492 Congress Street Whitney Art Works features monthly solo and curated group exhibitions by our artists from Maine and beyond.

Gallery hours: Wed-Sat 12-6 PM

Walker Terrace is a "window gallery" which features installations on a rotating schedule.


Our other projects include:

The Portland Paper Project is an ongoing collection of works on paper stored in the flat files at Whitney Art Works. The works are available for viewing and purchase by the general public, and periodically guest curators are invited to select works from the files and organize a small exhibition in the Viewing Room. Through the inclusion of drawings, prints, collage and photography, the goal of the Portland Paper Project is to make is to make works on paper more accessible to artists, curators, collectors and the public.

Movies at the Square is an exciting new collaboration between Whitney Art Works and One Longfellow Square. Each month cites a new theme, illustrated by films, Hollywood and alternative, through the decades. Film Nights will often include discussions and/or short features which will supplement the film or the month's theme. Films are shown at One Longfellow Square ar 8PM Wednesday nights.
