Whitney Art Works is proud to present "New transmitters for the same old stupidities", an exhibition by Sam van Aken. van Aken's dynamic work has been nationally and internationally recognized for its examination of diverse topics such as genetic engineering and the psychological impact of media through installations that merge sculpture, video, performance and interactivity.

In his first solo show at a commercial gallery in nearly seven years, van Aken will fill the Whitney Art Works multi-room project space at 45 York Street with new sculpture, sound, photography and installation, including an operational replica of an Irish pub set in the back of an inconspicuous utility trailer. The camper/bar explores the dislocation and loss of sense of place caused by the cookie-cutter interior designs of corporate architectures. Other works include a six foot tall, self-propelled sphere made of sub-woofer speakers and a life-size photo of the artist in the guise of Thriller-era Michael Jackson. This new work further develops van Aken's manic explorations of media-saturated culture through documentation and fiction, authenticity and imitation, selfhood and appropriation. Accessible and thought-provoking, van Aken's work is simultaneously obsessive, funny, and frightening and startlingly contemporary.

Sam van Aken is currently an Assistant Professor at Syracuse University. He has recently exhibited his work at Colby College, Museum of Art, the Dallas Video Art Festival and has an upcoming residency and exhibition at the Tacheles Art Center in Berlin, Germany.

Sam van Aken was recently awarded the 2007 Portland Musum of Art's Biennial Juror's Prize--the Portland Museum of Art Biennial continues through June 10...
